Gematria: What It Is, How to Calculate It, and a Gematria Calculator
Every Hebrew letter is also a number. Explore what gematria is, where it comes from, and four calculation methods, with a calculator that finds the gematria value of a word or phrase as you type.

The Hebrew alphabet has no separate numerals. To write a number, people used letters: א is 1, י is 10, and ת is 400. Hebrew dates are still written this way today—Tu Bishvat, the fifteenth of Shevat, is written ט״ו: ט(9)+ו(6). Numbers in sacred texts and on coins were written this way as well.
What Is Gematria?
Gematria assigns numerical values to letters and reads a word as the sum of its letters. If every letter has a value, then every word has a number—and entirely different words can add up to the same number.
That equivalence is the heart of the practice. When two words have the same value, the interpretive tradition has understood it as a hint of a connection between them—אהבה (love) and אחד (one), for example, both equal 13. These calculations do not reveal new facts; they offer a way to connect ideas and reflect on them.
It is important to distinguish between two things. Using letters to represent numbers is a technical feature of Hebrew writing—it is how Hebrew dates, chapters, and verses are written. Gematria takes the next step: treating a word’s total value as meaningful. The first is notation; the second is interpretation.
How Gematria Is Used in Numerology
Numerology works with numbers—a birth date, and often a name as well. Turning a name into a number requires a way to convert letters into digits. In other languages, this is done using an agreed-upon conversion chart. Hebrew does not need such a chart: its letters already serve as numbers, and gematria provides the conversion itself. This makes gematria the natural entry point for numerology in Hebrew.
Its main use is the name number: you calculate the name’s gematria value, reduce it to a single digit, and interpret that digit like any other number in numerology. A name with a value of 441, for example, reduces through 4+4+1 to 9.
In practice, people use this in several ways:
Interpreting a name. The name’s value is reduced to a single digit, inviting reflection on what that digit represents—beginnings, partnership, expression, structure, and so on. Each digit has its own article on the site, from Number 1 through Number 9.
Comparing names. Two names that reduce to the same digit are read as carrying a similar dynamic; names that reduce to widely separated digits are read as complementing one another or creating tension between them.
Choosing a name. When choosing a name for a child, business, or project, some people check which digit it reduces to and favor a digit that fits what they want the name to carry.
Interpreting a word or blessing. The same calculation works for any word, not just a name—so you can also explore a sentence, a blessing, or a place name.
Keep master numbers in mind: if the reduction passes through 11 or 22, the usual practice is to stop there rather than continue to a single digit. Read more in Master Number 11.
This reduction is exactly what the calculator at the top of the page calls Digit-Sum Reduction, so you can get both results—the full value and the single digit—without calculating them by hand.
The Values of the Letters
The sequence is arranged in three tiers. The letters א–ט represent 1 through 9. The letters י–צ represent the tens: 10, 20, 30, and so on through 90. The letters ק–ת represent the hundreds: ק is 100, ר is 200, ש is 300, and ת is 400. Together, the twenty-two letters add up to 1495.
Four Calculation Methods
Standard Value is the usual calculation—the sum of the letters’ numerical values. When someone refers to “the gematria of a word” without specifying a method, this is what they mean. אהבה (love) is 1+5+2+5, or 13.
Ordinal Value counts each letter’s position in the alphabet rather than its numerical value: א is 1, י is 10, and ת is 22. This method narrows the large gaps between higher- and lower-value letters.
Reduced Value reduces each letter to a single digit by removing its zeros: ת (400) becomes 4, ש (300) becomes 3, and צ (90) becomes 9. Every letter falls within the range of 1–9.
Digit-Sum Reduction takes the Standard Value and adds its digits until only one digit remains. אמת (truth) is 441, and 4+4+1 gives 9. This is exactly the reduction numerology applies to a birth date, making it the natural meeting point between gematria and the site’s number series.
Final Letters
Five letters have a final form: ך ם ן ף ץ. They are counted exactly like the regular form of the letter—ם is 40, just like מ; ך is 20, just like כ; and so on. It is the same letter, written in the form Hebrew uses at the end of a word, and that form adds no value of its own.
Thus, שלום (peace) equals 376: ש(300) + ל(30) + ו(6) + ם(40).
Where Gematria Comes From
The name itself is most likely Greek. The Greek world had a parallel system called isopsephy, in which Greek letters also served as numbers. The idea of assigning numerical values to letters was widespread in antiquity and was not unique to Hebrew.
Within Jewish tradition, gematria appears in rabbinic literature as one of the methods used to interpret the Torah—in other words, as an interpretive tool alongside others. Later, it took on a much more central role in Kabbalistic literature, where the twenty-two letters are understood as building blocks. From there, it continued into Hasidism and spiritual literature up to the present day.
A Few Familiar Equivalences
חי (life) = 18. ח is 8 and י is 10. This is the source of the custom of giving charity and gifts in multiples of 18.
אהבה (love) = אחד (one) = 13. Both words add up to the same number, and together they equal 26—the value of the divine name, יהוה (10+5+6+5). This may be the most frequently cited equivalence in Kabbalistic literature.
אמת (truth) = 441, and through Digit-Sum Reduction, 9—the number associated in numerology with completion and wholeness. Read more about Number 9.
ישראל (Israel) = 541 and בראשית (in the beginning) = 913. You can check both in the calculator at the top of the page.
What Gematria Is Not
Gematria is a symbolic language and an interpretive tradition. It is not a science, does not predict events, and is not evidence of anything. Even within the tradition, it was regarded as a form of homiletic interpretation—a connection that illuminates an idea—not a way to prove a claim.
It is also worth recognizing the mathematical pitfall: there is an enormous number of words and four calculation methods. With so many ways to calculate, it is always possible to find two words that match. When you look for a match and find one, that is usually confirmation bias, not a discovery. The value of the practice lies in the reflection it invites, not in the proof it supposedly provides.
Questions and Answers About Gematria
How Do You Calculate the Gematria of a Word?
Add the value of each letter: א=1, ב=2, and so on through י=10, then by tens through צ=90, and then by hundreds through ת=400. The calculator on this page does this as you type and also displays a letter-by-letter breakdown.
Can You Calculate the Gematria of an Entire Sentence?
Yes. Spaces and punctuation are not counted, so a sentence’s value is the sum of all its letters. The calculator accepts an entire sentence, not just a single word.
Why Did I Get a Different Number on Another Website?
There are two possible reasons. The first is a different calculation method—Ordinal Value or Reduced Value rather than Standard Value. The calculator displays all of them side by side, so check which result you were comparing. The second is that some websites count final letters differently: some sources assign ך ם ן ף ץ values of 500–900. Here, they are counted like the regular forms of the letters, which is the prevailing practice.
Do Hebrew Vowel Marks Affect Gematria?
No. Vowel marks, cantillation marks, and the geresh and gershayim punctuation marks are not letters and have no numerical value. The calculator removes them before calculating, so “בְּרֵאשִׁית” and “בראשית” receive the same value.
What Is the Difference Between Gematria and Numerology?
Gematria begins with letters and assigns a value to each one. Numerology begins with numbers—a birth date, and sometimes a name—and reduces them to a single digit. The two meet when a gematria value is reduced to a single digit.
Can Gematria Predict the Future?
No. Gematria does not predict events or provide information about the world. It is an interpretive tool for reflection and for making connections between ideas, and it should not be relied on for medical, legal, or financial decisions.
